Как появился и где найти мыс Хамелеон

Cape Chameleon has been known for a long time: it is depicted on ancient Italian nautical maps and described in the oldest Russian sailings.

It appeared thanks to the Kara-Dag volcano, which threw out huge amounts of ash. The cape is located 20 km from Feodosia, near the village of Koktebel, a Crimean resort known for its hospitality and a factory of vintage wines and cognacs (on the way to the cape, you can buy a wonderful cognac in a company store). The cape is located between the bays Mertvaya and Tikhaya, and according to the Crimean Tatars it bears the name of Clay Rock - Toprakh-kaya.

What does it look like and what attracts tourists?

The cape was named the Chameleon because of its ability to change its color 15-20 times a day, striking photographers with incredible shades. It can be ocher, have a green or purple hue, and after half an hour become purple or blue. Many claim to have seen it in bright orange, pink and purple. Clay shale - the base of the cape - is responsible for these transformations. They tend to display the rays of the sun and the color of the rock depends on the position of the star in the sky, clouds and clouds and, of course, the weather.

In addition to color metamorphoses, if you look at the cape from a bird's eye view, you can see that it really looks like an amphibian with a crest on its back, which came to drink water from the sea. The cape is very beautiful and majestic, but very few dare to walk along it to the very top because of the strong winds above and relatively loose soil itself. Usually tourists prefer to set up a tent city in Tikhaya Bay and enjoy the multicolored cape from a safe distance.

Hurry to see the cape!

The fact is that Cape Chameleon was originally large and wide, but now a narrow high ridge remains from it (the highest point is 61 m, the length is 70 m, the maximum narrowing reaches 2 m), to the top of which only the most desperate photo lovers can get ... Clay is clay and it doesn't like water. The cape is slowly slipping into the sea and is already covered with cracks, because waves and rains thoroughly erode it. You need to hurry up to enjoy the wonderful view of the color-changing ridge. Most likely, the time will come and the passage to Cape Chameleon will be closed for hiking, and water and wind will eventually finish their job and the masterpiece of nature will disappear from the face of the Earth.

A little about Koktebel

From the top of the Kuchuk-Yenishar mountain, perhaps the most colorful view of the Chameleon opens, and from the very cape, you can enjoy the enchanting view of the village of Koktebel. It is from Kuchuk-Yenshar that you will find another Crimean landmark - the grave of Maximilian Voloshin, a poet, artist and a great connoisseur of Crimea. Thanks to him, the village of Koktebel became a famous and favorite place of the progressive intelligentsia. In 1924, Voloshin built his house in Koktebel, according to a project that combined medieval and Mediterranean architecture.

Famous writers, poets and artists often came to visit the artist - Gumilyov, Tsvetaevs, Chukovsky, Green, Alexey Tolstoy, Petrov-Vodkin, Boris Kustodiev, Pyotr Konchalovsky and many others. Many of his friends followed Voloshin's example and acquired housing in the Crimea. Now Koktebel is a modern, well-maintained resort, with excellent infrastructure for tourists - connoisseurs of Crimean nature and the life-giving power of the Black Sea.

How to get to Cape Chameleon?

It is most convenient to get to Chameleon and Tikhaya Bay by private car or taxi. You need to get to Koktebel, and the road P-29 "Feodosia - Sudak - Alushta" leads to it. You need to turn off the road at the colonnade of the cognac factory and get to the store, then the road will lead you to Tikhaya Bay, from which you can get to the cape.
