Research scientist of the Crimea A.A.Prozorovsky-Golitsin in 1881 revealed the volcanic origin of Karadag. And later in 1885, AE Lagorio, Corresponding Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, made the first geological map of the massif.
At the beginning of the 20th century, a natural biological station was opened on Karadag by the Moscow neuropathologist Terenty Vyazemsky. In 1979, on the basis of the biological station, the Karadag State Reserve (area 2874.2 hectares) was created, which includes the territory of the mountain range and the adjacent sea area (809 hectares).
Location of Kara-Dag on the Map
Kara-Dag is a narrowly collected massif of mountains with towering mountain peaks. The nature divided two valleys by Kara-Dag - the valley of the Sudak and the valley of Koktebel, with their such different natural conditions. Gardens and vineyards adorn the Sudak Valley. The Koktebel Valley is a steppe scorched by the sun.
Kingdom of Hades and origin story
The Crimean Karadag is the "remains" of an extinct, once mighty volcano, which found its life in time immemorial - in the Jurassic period. The land in those days was under the rule of giant reptiles, the Crimean peninsula had not yet been born.
Some scholars believe that Karadag is a kind of "father" of the Crimean peninsula. Initially, showing its activity under water, he changed the earth's crust so that an island first formed above the water, which eventually became a peninsula. The decay of the volcano coincides with the time when the giant reptiles disappeared.
Then the extinct volcano was influenced by intraterrestrial influences and atmospheric factors. Frequent tremors of the earth's crust in Crimea contributed to the collapse of the edges of the volcano, winds and water elements formed the current unusual appearance of the Karadag.
Some scientists consider Karadag to be a double volcano. The highest point is Mount Svyataya - a younger formation of the earth's crust. This version is not without grounds and the example of the non-Polish Vesuvius, which is in Italy, confirms this.
Legends about Karadag
The shrewd Greeks, although they did not understand the geological intricacies of the origin of the mountain, determined its essence correctly. They believed that through Karadag one could enter Hades, the ruler of the underworld. The actions of this deity are not connected with the activity of the volcano, but it is possible to become his guest only through underground tunnels that are inaccessible to mere mortals. The mouth of the volcano is also impossible to reach because of its destruction and blockage.
Greek legends claim that a monster, the Karadag Serpent, lives in the sea near Karadag. The Tatars, despite the slight difference in color of the mountain from other mountains of the Crimea, called it "Black Mountain". They believed that evil spirits live in its vicinity - devils, shaitans and demons. Impressed by the local places, people named the famous place "Devil's Gate" - the Golden Gate.
It is not surprising to get lost in these places, and even a compass may be useless, since the magnetic rocks of an extinct volcano will not allow the compass to correctly determine the cardinal points. Maximilian Voloshin favored Karadag. It seemed to him that the colonists from Greece and Genoa, who reached the Crimean peninsula, saw the same landscape as he did. This area paid the great poet with the same love. Many people note that the Kok-Kai ridge is similar to the Voloshin profile.
Excursions to Karadag
Visitors love to be photographed against the background of Karadag. Its beauty is clearly visible from both the sea and the peninsula. Now Karadag is zealously guarded by the state from the invasion of savage tourists, who in the second half of the twentieth century almost led it to complete destruction. Now it is possible to take excursions to Karadag, which are conducted by the staff of the reserve. A boat trip near the coast near Karadag is also possible.
The vegetation and geology of the mountain are quite remarkable. Juniper bushes and pistachios, which were considered curative since antiquity, create a healing air with an unusual aroma on the mountain.
Volcanic activity and atmospheric factors have created bizarre rock shapes. The Golden Gate protrudes from the sea water near the coastline. If you are the sender to them on a tour boat, throw a coin at them, trying to hit the stone. They say that if you manage to get into a stone, it will bring wealth, wishes will come true, and luck will accompany.
What characters of fairy tales and legends have not been imagined by the human image, considering the outlines of these rocks. Here you can meet Ivan the robber, and the Elephant, and the Queen with the King, Retinue and Throne, there is even a City of the Dead.
Here you can find many multi-colored stones, from which jewelry and mosaics were made centuries ago. Local jasper is not inferior to the Ural. Local agate, carnelian have a unique pattern, and pebbles of chalcedony and crystal are often found. Visitors manage to grab small carnelian or jasper stones as a souvenir, and even vigilant guards are unable to prevent them.
How to get to Karadag?
Experienced tourists know the way to Karadag. Travel options: you can go on foot from the Kurortnoye biological station, which can be reached by public transport or personal cars. But this is a boring option. But if you leave Koktebel by sea, and then go on foot, it will give you an unforgettable experience.
Tourist notes
A long walk through the Karadag reserve requires good physical fitness. Stock up on water as you won't find any shops nearby to replenish your supplies. If you just type in the Yandex Navigator the query "Mountain Karadag", then it will lead you to the mountain from the other side and you will not get on the excursion, and there is no way to go there yourself, since the territory is guarded.
