Historical reference

Maximilian Voloshin is a famous Russian poet, artist and literary critic. His father is Alexander Kirienko-Voloshin, and his mother is Elena Glazer. His father was from Zaporozhye Cossacks, and his mother was from German nobles.

Maximilian's childhood

Maximilian spent his childhood in Taganrog. His father died when he was 4 years old. After that, his mother moved with her son to Moscow.

When Voloshin was 16 years old, his mother bought a plot of land from Dr. Junge in the village of Koktebel and they moved there to live. Maximilian immediately fell in love with this place, where he studied at the gymnasium in Feodosia in 1893.

Study

In 1897 Voloshin entered the Faculty of Law at Moscow University. Due to participation in the strike, he was removed and forced to return to Feodosia.

After that Voloshin decided to go to Europe and engage in self-education. At the university, Maximilian decided not to recover. The thirst for knowledge of everything around him allowed him to obtain brilliant knowledge in all areas of science and art that interest him.

Voloshin lived abroad for about 15 years, regularly returning to Crimea to talk with friends and relatives. He sat for hours in the Sorbonne libraries, attended lectures there and took drawing lessons. Initially, he began to study painting in order to be able to give professional judgments about the work of other artists.

One of the most beloved cities in Europe for him was Paris. He regularly came there to get inspired and communicate with the brightest representatives of the culture of that time. In Russia, Voloshin entered the society of symbolist poets, as well as avant-garde artists. Both here and abroad, he surprised his comrades with his brilliant education and erudition, although he did not have an official university diploma.

Koktebel and the House of the Poet

At the beginning of 1903 Voloshin began to build his famous house in Koktebel according to his own project.

Voloshin was skeptical about wars and revolutions. He did not accept the October Revolution, and he expressed his point of view in the works "Iveria" (1918), "Deaf-mute Demons" (1919). As expected, in the USSR they stop publishing it, and persecution begins. Nevertheless, he creates the "House of the Poet" similar to a medieval castle, which is regularly visited by Tsvetaevs, Nikolai Gumilyov, Sergei Soloviev, Kornei Chukovsky, Osip Mandelstam, Andrei Bely, Valery Bryusov, Alexander Grin, Alexey Tolstoy and other prominent personalities.

His palotna differ from photographs, emphasizing and playing on those moments that an inexperienced person in painting will not immediately notice.

Voloshin was also fond of Japanese engraving. In this art, each color has a symbolic meaning. Therefore, Maximilian, like the Japanese masters, signed his engravings with couplets of his poems, decorated in different colors.

Voloshin was married to Maria Zabolotskaya. She preserved the creative legacy of Maximilian after his death in 1932. Now everyone can visit the "House of the Poet", which nowadays functions as a museum.surb hatch armyanskij monastyr krym 05

Grave on the mountain

voloshin 08Voloshin's grave in Koktebel on the Kuchuk-Enyshar mountain has become a place of pilgrimage for those who are not indifferent to the literary and artistic heritage of Crimea. It is located at the very top of the Kuchuk-Yenishar mountain - "Small Janissary". Voloshin himself chose the place of his burial long before his death.

Offering beautiful views from its summit, Kuchuk-Yenishar was one of Voloshin's favorite spots. With a height of only 192 meters (not high by Crimean standards), it is the highest mountain in Koktebel. The poet asked not to put a cross on his grave or plant trees. Having reached the grave, you will see two slabs of red granite - the graves of Maximilian and his wife Maria Zabolotskaya. The monument itself was erected only in 1976, although Voloshin himself died in 1932.

voloshin 06There are many different stones around the grave. Voloshin himself loved to collect local gems or intricate pebbles. After his death, Maximilian asked to bring him stones, not traditional flowers. Over time, the grave of the writer began to be considered mystical - capable of fulfilling all desires. To make a wish come true, you need to write your wish on it and bring a pebble to the grave from which a large mountain was formed. Someone scratches out their desires, and someone just sews them with a permanent marker.

Voloshin's grave has become a popular route for various excursions. You can climb to it on foot. On the way to Voloshin's grave, you can see the grave of a person no less significant for Koktebel - Dr. Jung.

Note for tourists

To climb Mount Kuchuk-Yenyshar you will not need much time, but like on Cape Chameleon, strong winds blow there. Do not forget to bring warm clothes and enough water as there is no way to purchase these items nearby.
